I recently worked on a project for a dear friend of mine and the company she works for, The Pangaea Project. “The Pangaea Project builds leadership skills and attributes [with low-income, high-risk youth] through the lens of social justice issues, emphasizing the importance of a global perspective. Participants are empowered to lead their own lives effectively, make great choices, and initiate meaningful contributions within the larger community.”

I created an e-vite for a fundraising dinner at, what looks like a divine restaurant, Acadia Bistro in Portland, Oregon. Below is the final e-vite and then a beginning version.

We had a large family gathering to celebrate the start of the new year at my sister’s home in Albuquerque, NM. My mom and I thought it would be fun to have a souvenir to mark the occasion. I did the design and she strung the ribbons with 100-year-old glass beads.

Scarred Earth…

I finally went through my photographs (A reason I don’t like digital photography. The photos hide on my computer, ‘undeveloped.’) from a visit to our family land in Cuyamaca Rancho State Park east of San Diego in June 2009. We were there in celebration of the life of my great-uncle. We scattered his ashes on the site where a glorious cabin once stood; a cabin built in the early 1930s with Shelton sweat and grit and used for decades by our family for weekend getaways, reunions and holidays.

The Cedar Fire in October of 2003 destroyed the cabin and many other homes and structures. It was my first time back to Cuyamaca since the fire. It was ghostly as well as rejuvenating. The Earth was regrowing and birthing new life around the scars, softening the loss. My cousin, Samantha Shelton, wrote a beautiful song – “Everything Was Lost” – about our cherished spot. You can find her website here and listen to her songs. The girl’s got talent.
